The Fascia Connection

Guttering and fascia boards are not independent systems — the fascia is the structural fixing point for the gutter, and a failing fascia means failing guttering regardless of the condition of the guttering itself. On Derby's older post-war housing stock, timber fascias are now 50–70 years old. When we attend a guttering job and find brackets pulling away from the fascia, the correct repair is fascia replacement, not just refixing the bracket into soft timber. We identify this at survey and include it in the quote rather than discovering it on the day.

The connection runs the other way too — persistent gutter overflow caused by blockage or a failing fall angle saturates the fascia from the back face, the face that isn't visible. Timber rot behind the gutter is often well advanced before any visible sign appears at the front. An annual gutter clear is the most cost-effective way to prevent fascia decay; replacing a fascia that has rotted because of neglected guttering costs £400–£800 in addition to the gutter work itself.

Cast Iron Guttering on Derby Period Properties

The Victorian and Edwardian terraces around Friar Gate, Normanton Road and the Cathedral Quarter often retain original cast iron guttering. Cast iron guttering, properly maintained, is superior to uPVC in longevity and appearance — it's heavier, holds its profile under UV exposure, and carries an authenticity appropriate to the period of the property. The maintenance requirement is periodic repainting — every 8–10 years — and re-sealing of joints when the original sealant hardens and cracks. Most cast iron guttering we see on Derby period properties hasn't been painted in 20+ years and the joints have opened, causing overflow and the wall staining that follows.

We repair, repaint and re-seal cast iron guttering rather than automatically recommending uPVC replacement. Where replacement is necessary — section damage, broken outlets, unsalvageable joints — we replace in cast iron where conservation area requirements or homeowner preference justifies it, and in cast iron-effect uPVC where a cost-effective, maintenance-free alternative is preferred.

Correct Fall Specification

Guttering must fall toward the outlet — typically 1:600, meaning 5mm drop per 3 metres of run. A gutter with insufficient fall retains standing water after rainfall, accelerating joint deterioration, promoting algae and moss growth inside the channel, and causing persistent overflow at low points. Re-hanging guttering at the correct fall angle is part of every full gutter replacement and is often the solution to apparent blockages in gutters that are actually clear but not draining correctly.

Gutter Sizing for Derby's Rainfall Pattern

Standard 112mm half-round guttering — the most common profile on Derby's post-war housing stock — is correctly sized for most domestic roof areas when properly installed at the correct fall angle. Problems arise when an extension or conversion increases the effective roof catchment area that drains to the existing gutter, exceeding its capacity during heavy rainfall.
